Therapeutic Interventions

CBT is a widely recognised and well regarding therapy which focuses on the link between negative thoughts, difficult feelings and the association with our behaviours. It's a great skill based therapy which supports you to become aware of your every day thought processes to avoid common spirals leading to poor mental health. Recommended as the gold standard therapy under the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for many difficulties, there have been adaptations such as Compassion-focused therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy which I draw on during sessions.

EMDR focuses on negative and traumatic memories to shift present symptoms. Founded on the use of bilateral stimulation, it focuses on eye movements during sessions whilst bringing negative material to mind. Whilst originally for PTSD, it has expanded to support with a range of mental health difficulties that may be related to an unprocessed past. I will work with you to explore potentially relevant memories in a way tolerable and at your pace. I will ensure to equip you with coping strategies before exploring the more difficult aspects of your life.

Alongside my therapy approaches, I integrate principles from attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969) into my practice. Attachments with others are formed throughout the lifespan and can be influenced by your early experience of relationships. It is often helpful in therapy to explore how early relationships have shaped your attachment style and how this may influence your current thoughts, emotions, and relationships. This can help us work towards developing more secure and fulfilling connections in your life. The approach is also very relevant to parenting and I draw on this during parenting support.
